“Turkey neck”, “wrinkled neck”… all unflattering terms that drive many women – and men – to seek a solution to tighten the skin on their neck. But can the skin on the neck really be smoothed without a facelift ? Spoiler: the answer is yes. In fact, there are many natural solutions for firming the neck and putting an end to double chins at the same time. If so, here’s a quick rundown of the main anti-ageing techniques available to tone the skin of the neck without surgery.
What causes sagging neck skin?
As a general rule, sagging neck skin starts to become visible between the ages of 40 and 50. The result ? Wrinkled, increasingly sagging skin… and even the appearance of a veritable ” turkey neck “. This is a marked sagging of the skin on the neck, associated with horizontal wrinkles known as ” Venus collars ” or, on the contrary, visible vertical stripes. These are also known as “platysmal bands”, as they are due to the relaxation of the platysma muscle, the skin muscle of the neck that extends from the thorax to the lower jaw and cheek.
Is it dangerous to your health ? No. On the other hand, it is detrimental to the overall aesthetics of your face, especially if the turkey neck is associated with a double chin (accumulation of fat under the jaw).
The cause ? Usually an accumulation of several factors. The main ones simply being :
the skin’s natural aging process. As collagen and elastin production diminish over time, skin tissue eventually sags. The effects are all the more visible as skin in the neck area is particularly thin ;
hypertrophy and degeneration of the platysma muscle. Once again, this is a natural age-related phenomenon.
However, other factors can accelerate and accentuate the signs of skin aging on the neck. These include
genetic predisposition. In some people, sagging skin can appear as early as the age of 35 ;
frequent exposure to the sun’s UV rays, which weaken the skin ;
smoking, which is known to accelerate the appearance of wrinkles on the face and neck ;
major weight fluctuations, which can reduce skin elasticity ;
regular repetition of poor posture. Did you know, for example, that spending several hours a day with your head bent forward on your smartphone can eventually weaken the platysma muscle ? This is known as ” Text Neck “.
Natural solutions for tightening neck skin
Good news: there are several natural solutions that can help smooth skin and restore neck contours. You can use them as soon as the first signs of skin slackening appear. But some of them are even capable of reducing already pronounced neck wrinkles.
Bodysculptor lifting mask
Before considering the scalpel, why not try a natural lift of the lower face, chin and neck, thanks to the Bodysculptor lifting mask ? Its main objectives:
reshape the oval of the face ;
firm the skin on the neck and face ;
reduce wrinkles ;
All painlessly, safely and non-invasively. Suitable for both men and women, the Bodysculptor lifting mask uses a very low-frequency magnetic field to gently stimulate the area’s skin muscles. Including the famous platysma ! Another strong point: you can use it directly at home, for visible results generally within 1 month with regular use.
Bodysculptor mask
BodySculptor Le Masque, the 1st triple-action anti-aging mask: oval – neck – décolleté. It delivers concrete, measured and proven results in just a few weeks: a refined face, an erasing effect on the double chin, an anti-slackening effect, smoother, firmer skin on the neck and décolleté.
Neck massage
You can also perform a gentle daily massage to firm the skin on your neck. Best practices:
wash your hands well before starting, and file your nails if necessary. Never forget that the skin on the neck is extremely delicate. It takes very little to irritate or mark it ;
use a firming oil, cream or serum so that your fingers glide easily along your neck. This will also improve your skin’s hydration ;
Whether you use your fingertips or the flat of your hands, movements should always be gentle and upward, to counteract the effects of gravity.
Last but not least, don’t hesitate to give yourself a facial massage to boost blood circulation and skin radiance. Did you know that this is one of the most popular treatments offered by beauty salons ?
Creams and Gels
When it comes to firming treatments for the neck and décolleté, you’re spoilt for choice. Many serums, creams and gels are specially designed for this delicate area. Collagen, hyaluronic acid… Take the time to compare their composition to make the right choice.
OsmoSculpt® Anti-Age hydrogel, for example, contains the active ingredient Matrixyl. By stimulating collagen synthesis, it improves skin firmness and elasticity. This directly reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Apply by massage, ideally in combination with the Bodysculptor lifting mask to optimize its effects.
Vegetable oils
Vegetable oils are also an interesting alternative for your daily neck massages. Many are rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins A, B, C, D and E, which promote cell regeneration and skin hydration. Some of the best massage oils for tightening neck skin include :
wheat germ oil, which owes its anti-aging effects to its high vitamin E content, a powerful antioxidant ;
Avocado oil, for its richness in fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E, which nourish the skin and improve its elasticity ;
orevening primrose oil, particularly appreciated by mature skin for its ability to restore the hydrolipidic film and prevent skin slackening.
A few drops of vegetable oil are usually all you need for a massage. Pour them into your hands first, then gently rub your palms together to warm the oil before massaging.
Facial gymnastics
And what if you also found help in firming up your neck in the form of facial gymnastics? As the name suggests, facial gyms include a wide range of exercises for the skin on the face. But many of them also target the neck and décolleté.
One of the most popular – and easiest to perform – is to slowly tilt your head back, hold the position for a few seconds, then return to your original position. Repeat several times a day, like most facial gymnastics exercises. If you need inspiration for your special neck and décolleté routine, take a look at the video by Marie from Gym Visage.
How can it help tighten the skin on the neck?
The principle behind these exercises is to tone the underlying skin muscles, thereby reducing the appearance of sagging. In fact, it would appear that muscle stimulation can have a “lifting” effect on the skin of the neck and face, without the need for surgery. This fact was corroborated by an American study published in 20061revealing the effectiveness of electrical muscle stimulation in improving skin firmness. Today, we also speak of low-intensity micro-currents, or even nano-currents, depending on the technology used.
Bonus tip: avoid the sun…
Using various natural solutions to tighten the skin on the neck is good. It’s even better not to waste all your efforts on bad habits. As a complement to your anti-aging skincare routine, make sure you don’t overexpose yourself to the sun.
In practical terms, this means staying in the shade as much as possible when the sun is at its zenith (between 12:00 and 16:00). It’s less risky to expose yourself outside these hours, BUT you should still apply a good sun protection to your skin. This is a really important measure to slow down the appearance of signs of skin ageing and limit the risk of skin cancer. Finally, make sure you eat a healthy diet and moisturize regularly, to preserve your skin’s tone and radiance.
Non-surgical medical solutions
Without going so far as to use the scalpel, you should know that you can also use anti-aging treatments based on aesthetic medicine to boost the firmness of your neck. From mesotherapy to the use of tensor threads, we explain the principle behind the main solutions employed by doctors. At the end of the article, you’ll also find a comparative table showing the duration, average cost and limitations of each method.
Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy relies on micro-injections of non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid, with the addition of various vitamins, directly into the skin layers of the neck. The concept is to “nourish” the skin from within, to improve its firmness, elasticity and hydration.
What are the risks ? Quite rare. They include bacterial infection, if the equipment has not been properly cleaned – hence the importance of carefully checking the practitioner’s reputation, as some people do not hesitate to pass themselves off as qualified doctors on the Net. Small hematomas may also appear at the puncture site.
Finally, there is an allergic risk with this technique, but it is rare. The most important thing is not to conceal any of your medical history from the practitioner, to limit the risks. The first consultation will also enable us to check that you have no contraindications (e.g. autoimmune disease, blood coagulation disorders, current treatment with corticosteroids, etc.).
Radiofrequency
In a completely different style, radiofrequency is also one of the most popular treatments offered by aesthetic physicians to tone the skin of the neck. The principle? Diffuse electromagnetic waves to “heat” the deep layers of the skin, activating collagen production. This is responsible for the lifting effect observed.
A well-known effect, moreover, since an American study published in 20042 already highlighted the effectiveness of radiofrequency in tightening the skin of the cheeks, eyelids and neck.
As far as risks are concerned, you should bear in mind that there is a very slight probability of burns if the device is incorrectly adjusted or if the area is used for too long. Here again, it’s essential to check that you’re using a REAL practitioner to avoid this type of inconvenience. There are also a number of contraindications (e.g. wearing a pacemaker, poorly healed wounds or burns, recent skin cancer). Ask your doctor for advice first.
Ultrasound (HIFU)
The HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) technique activates the body’s own production of collagen and elastin, by diffusing high-intensity ultrasound into deep skin tissue. In addition to tightening the skin of the neck, this treatment is also often used to reduce jowls, reshape the oval of the face and eliminate the double chin.
Although ultrasound is considered very safe, a facial nerve can sometimes be damaged. This is very rare – and, fortunately, reversible in the majority of cases. The practitioner really needs to make a handling error for this to happen. We can’t stress this enough: take the time to choose the right practitioner. Finally, there are a few contraindications (e.g. pacemaker, dental implant).
Hyaluronic acid injections
This solution involves injecting cross-linked hyaluronic acid. This is a thicker, more viscous form of hyaluronic acid than that used in mesotherapy. Here, the aim is not so much to tighten the skin durably as to fill in the most pronounced neck wrinkles as quickly as possible. The texture of cross-linked hyaluronic acid enables it to remain “firmly in place” for several months to fill hollows.
Advantage: visually, the effect on wrinkles is immediate. But this technique has little impact on very slack skin. To be considered according to your exact needs.
Unsurprisingly, there is a rare risk of infection – as with all injection-based techniques – temporary swelling, hematoma and allergy. Finally, contraindications to hyaluronic acid injections (e.g. blood coagulation disorders, autoimmune disease) are much the same as for mesotherapy.
Botox injection
The great advantage of Botox injections for neck rejuvenation is that they can reduce platysmal bands. The injection of botulinum toxin limits muscular contraction of the platysma, thus erasing these unsightly bands: the neck looks smoother, and therefore younger.
On the other hand, be extremely careful. Some unscrupulous influencers, notably on TikTok, recommend “homemade Botox injections to save money”. Need we point out that this is extremely dangerous? The ANSM (Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament et des produits de santé) was forced to sound the alarm in 2025, following the hospitalization of several people who had developed a serious infection akin to botulism. Only qualified doctors, using high-quality products, can carry out these injections without any problems.
Microneedling
Using a kind of pen or roller fitted with very fine micro-needles, the practitioner creates tiny perforations in the skin. The aim: to naturally stimulate collagen and elastin production. Microneedling is commonly used to reduce the Venus collar and combat sagging skin. It is often combined with serums enriched with hyaluronic acid or vitamins, to optimize the effectiveness of turkey neck care.
Minor bleeding from the treated areas, redness, temporary swelling and infections: these are the main risks of this method. But, as always, these are very rare, and you can avoid the most serious problems by using the services of a certified practitioner. Finally, remember that the main contraindications to microneedling are: the presence of a skin disease (e.g. acne), a history of abnormal scarring and taking isotretinoin (Roaccutane), if this medication is less than 6 months old.
Cryolipolysis
Cryolipolysis to firm neck skin? You might not think about it, but this well-known aesthetic medicine technique can indeed be used in this area. As a reminder, cryolipolysis involves eliminating adipocytes – the fat-storing cells – by means of cold. This method is therefore particularly indicated if you want to eliminate a double chin while firming up your neck.
Of course, there are a few contraindications (e.g. cold urticaria, Raynaud’s disease, Lupus). The doctor must ensure that you have no such contraindications before starting the treatment. Possible side effects include bruising, edema, superficial burns and temporary loss of sensitivity in the treated area.
Tensor threads
We conclude our overview of aesthetic medicine techniques for tightening the skin of the neck with the use of tensor threads. In concrete terms, this technique involves inserting very fine threads under the skin to immediately tighten sagging tissue. Many doctors use biodegradable sutures, which absorb naturally over time. However, the use of non-absorbable sutures is sometimes considered.
However, in either case, remember that “excess” skin is not removed. It is therefore best to avoid this technique in cases of very significant skin slackening, at the risk of seeing a bulge form!
Bruising, redness and swelling may also occur after thread placement, but these usually disappear within a few days.
